Waste

All municipalities have waste management for household waste, paper and cardboard and extraordinarily polluting waste. Additionally there are collection places in all municipalities where inhabitants can dispose of waste. The use is mandatory: Everybody is obliged to use the municipalty’s waste management or their assigned places of disposal.

Collected waste is either incinerated, placed on landfill or recycled. Certain waste is grouped as extraordinarily polluting and is exported for special treatment.

Authorised recipients of waste Kommunala Brennistøðin (KB) in Tórshavnar municipality, and IRF, which is an inter-municipal wastemanagement association owned and run by the other 28 municipalities. Adittionally four private companies are authorised to receive special types of waste.

KB and IRF are responsible for collecting and managing all waste in their municipalities. KB receives waste from about 7,500 households and IRF from about 11,000 households. In addition they accept waste from institutions and businesses.

In addition to this IRF receives waste oil and oil-contaminated water for refining and resale.
