This indicator contains some alternative data to those specified by the United Nations (UN). This indicator is the most suitable match currently available.
Due to limited data availability, the indicator is calculated as inbound tourism direct gross value added (TDGVA) as a percentage of total gross value added (GVA), rather than tourism direct gross domestic product (TDGDP) as a percentage of total gross domestic product (GDP). Both numerator and denominator are measured at basic prices and in current prices.#Section 4.f of the UN metadata for SDG indicator 8.9.1 (updated 27 March 2026) allows TDGVA as a percentage of total GVA to be used as a proxy for TDGDP as a percentage of total GDP. However, the Faroese estimate is additionally restricted to inbound tourism. This means that it covers expenditure by non-resident visitors and excludes tourism expenditure by residents of the Faroe Islands.
